Since its founding in 2005, Tacoma’s Buffalo Soldiers Museum has served as a community resource encompassing a significant – and all too often overlooked – facet of American history. It is part of our overall historical education efforts.
"The mission is achieved through educational programs, historic research, youth outreach programs and exhibits. The museum creates and disseminates knowledge about the history of the Buffalo Soldiers and their service and contributions."
Jackie Jones-Hook, Executive Director
The mission of Tacoma’s Buffalo Soldiers Museum is to educate, preserve and
present the history and outstanding contributions of America’s Buffalo Soldiers
from 1866-1944, including World War I and II. This includes significant history in Washington State. Buffalo Soldiers Museum is a space that fosters the exchange of historical education, identity and culture, making it a practical link to a stronger community. The mission and vision statement can be found in the
museum’s bylaws. Both statements were adopted and approved by the
museum’s Board of Directors in 2011.
We envision that the museum will be a place where American history and culture exchange is a link to a better community, and will serve as an educational resource to the school system for American History education and inspiration to youth, and will be a community partner in celebration and military appreciation on MLK Day, Veterans’ Day, Memorial Day and Labor Day to honor all service members who have served this country, and will institute and maintain a sense of pride for black Americans and the building of the Western Frontier, and will be a place where the community can come together and learn more about the valor, dedication and integrity of African American soldiers. We envision the museum experience will build deeper understanding and appreciation of the Soldiers’ motto – “We Can, We Will” and “Ready - Forward!”
